"Sustainable fashion" is a hot word that has been widely discussed in the fashion circle and the apparel industry in recent years.
How it all began
More and more fashion brands are exploring environmentally friendly production methods and raw materials.
GREENEXT, a sustainable fashion and lifestyle platform, released the “Sustainability Research Report of 1001 Fashion Brands”.
The report shows:
66% of brands believe that sustainable development is the mainstream trend in the future fashion industry and a key foothold to solving the predicament of the fashion industry;
77% of brands are already developing or plan to develop sustainable fashion products in at least 1-2 years;
70% of brands want to attract consumers with a sustainable brand image;
69% of brands believe that the supply chain is very important in promoting sustainable fashion;
57% of brands believe that consumers are willing to pay a 6%-15% premium for sustainable fashion products.
This means that in the next 2-3 years, sustainability will become the highlight of the development of the entire fashion industry. In fact, more and more brands focusing on natural ingredients are emerging around the world.
natural imagination
Snow crabs, eucalyptus trees, plastics… These substances that have never been thought of have now become the basic fabrics of clothing, shoes and hats. What other imaginations do you have?
From unsustainable manufacturing methods to plastic waste filling the oceans, the fashion industry is the world’s second largest environmental polluter after the petrochemical industry.
A shared data from the apparel industry is that the textile industry emits 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gases every year, accounting for 10% of the global total. Textile fiber, yarn and fabric manufacturers are the main emitters of greenhouse gases in the fashion industry.
Sustainable fashion is not the task of a single brand, but a process of transforming the entire fashion industry and fashion system towards more ecological integrity and social justice. Only building an ecosystem that invests in and promotes sustainable and responsible consumer behavior is the true development direction of the industry in the future, and it is also a benign environment for the sustainable development of sustainable brands.
Taking the brand ZARA as an example, Zara designs 18,000 new styles every year, and new styles are launched every 2-3 weeks on average, and about 50,000 new fashions are launched every year. Based on the requirements of continuously shortening the production cycle and increasing the frequency of new product launches, fast fashion enterprises have created a huge threat to the environment. Statistics show that 34% of the microplastics found in the oceans come from the textile and clothing industry, with most of them made from polyester, polyethylene, acrylic and elastane.
Selecting more sustainable alternative raw materials and developing more sustainable methods in raw material sourcing, manufacturing and product distribution is one of the ways that more and more companies are turning to “slow fashion”.
Fitness apparel uses the most recycled nylon sustainable fabrics, using new nylon fabrics synthesized from ocean plastics, discarded fishing nets, and waste fabrics. While it feels identical to nylon, the fabric is made using a closed-loop system that doesn’t require as much water.
Compared with ordinary nylon fabrics, environmentally friendly nylon fabrics not only have the advantages of ordinary fabrics, but also conform to the concept of sustainable development, making certain contributions to reducing air pollution and contracting resources.
